What is a scooter fork?
A pro scooter fork is what attaches the front wheel to the deck. A fork consists of a front axle that goes through the wheel and tightens on both sides to hold the wheel in place. On all scooter forks there is some sort of compression system, at the top, that squeezes the fork up and holds it in place.
Depending on which compression system you run and what size wheels you use will make a great impact into determining which fork you should get.
Do Scooter Forks Break?
Although this isn’t a common occurrence, scooter forks do break. Most typically you see this happen with older riders who are very skilled and willing to take some big jumps. We’ve worked hands on with a lot of scooters and have seen a lot of forks break over time from beginner riders as well and there seems to be a common link. Tricks that put rotational stress on the fork tend to be linked to forks breaking. These tricks include stuff like 180’s and tail whips.
Usually you'll be fine performing these tricks, but it is worth noting that if you land hard you can damage your fork. But that’s the name of the game, don't let it stop you from getting that new learn! If you ever have questions about the integrity of your fork make sure to reach out to us or your local scooter shop so you can keep riding safely.
Types Of Scooter Forks
If you don’t know the difference between SCS, HIC, IHC, & ICS - make sure to do your research to ensure you get the perfect fork you need.
Scooter Forks For IHC
Scooter forks for IHC are slimmer than other scooter forks. The reason these forks are thinner is that a little compression shim or sleeve slides over the top of the fork - these shims are usually bumpy to increase their grip with the bars around them. The compression bolt that screws into the top of your fork causes a slight expansion of the shim to ensure a tight fit.
Scooter Forks For SCS & HIC
Scooter forks for SCS & HIC are much thicker than other forks. You might be wondering why these two types of compression systems are grouped under one heading. Both SCS & HIC rely on forks of the same thickness. That means the only real difference in application is whether or not you run a shim. Forks for HIC require a shim and work the same way as forks for IHC but with larger oversized bars.
SCS forks on the other hand, are once again exactly the same as HIC forks but don't require a shim. The reason that SCS forks don’t need a shim is because the SCS style clamp is specially designed to hold onto the fork without extra assistance from a shim. The way this is accomplished is by inserting the top of the fork through the head tube of the deck and then into the bottom of the SCS clamp. From there the fork should sit a little bit below the “threshold” of the bottom section of the SCS clamp.
That little bit of a gap works out perfectly for holding the fork in place via a compression bolt. You see, the compression cap sits on that ledge above the gap. From there you put the compression bolt through the cap and into the fork as you would do if you had a shim. The compression bolt screws in and tightens - pushing down the compression clamp and holding the fork to the head tube of the deck. This is our favorite and the absolute strongest compression system available.
Are all scooter forks the same size?
That’s a no from us. As we discussed earlier your fork size depends on the type of compression system you are using. But the other big factor is whether or not your fork will fit your wheels. If you need new wheels but don’t want to get a new fork for a specific size we made an amazing list of the best pro scooter wheels.
If you look into the specifications of your fork you will find out what size wheels it is compatible with. Some forks that come with complete scooters are only compatible with 100mm X 24mm wheels. Most forks are only compatible with up to 110mm X 24mm wheels - this is definitely the most common size scooter wheel, so it works out great. That being said, we’ve seen forks that fit everything up to 125mm X 30mm wheels.
Luckily for you, our list of forks below is separated by compression type and wheel size compatibility. Hopefully this makes things easy for you!
